Brightly Painted Green Russian Doll Set 12cm

The first Russian nested doll set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin; designed by Sergey Malyutin, who was a folk crafts painter in the Abramtsevo estate of Savva Mamontov.
This set was exhibited at the Expostition Universelle in Paris in 1900, and such was the popularity of the toy, it began being made all over Russia, and shipped throughout the world.

This set of ten, brightly painted, green Russian Dolls have a unique floral design. Matryoshka literally means ‘Little Matron’. The name derives from Matryona, a popular female name in the 19th century.
Each doll is hand painted, ensuring each piece is unique, there might therefore be slight variations in colour and design to the image shown.

The largest doll in this set measures 12cm tall
